Independent Living

Teaching independent living skills is a critical component of programs supporting students with intellectual disabilities.  The independent living section of this website provides information on daily living needs including budgeting, health and safety, housing, personal care and hygiene, and transportation. This handbook is a parent’s guide to the On Campus Transition Residential Program option for students with intellectual disabilities attending the University of North Florida. The guide includes a description of the residential program, program rules and regulations, and general expectations for students participating in the residential program.

The Arc Jacksonville On Campus Transition program at the University of North Florida offers a unique and innovative residential component to the program. Students are given the opportunity to engage in the same experiences of other college students who are learning how to live with their peers, independently from home. The goal of the program is for the students to grow and mature like their peers in an environment typical of most college students living away from home (i.e., living with roommates.) By receiving guidance and support through peer-relationships with their HMs and fellow students, it is believed that the skills necessary to live in the community, with minimal supports.
