Using the STAR PCP as a framework and starting point, the presenters described the unique aspects of the student experience with STING RAY.

Our students spend two to four years with us auditing college courses, participating in clubs and on campus activities and receiving complete support with employment.  Upon graduation, many of them find themselves lost and alone without the structure and support they’ve had for the past few years. The participants will participate in the discussion to brainstorm ideas and begin thinking about how we can help our students make the transition to adult life from college.  Two students who have graduated from the ACCESS program at Lynn University will share their experiences.

Learn about My Health Care, an innovative program designed to empower adults with ID/DD to better meet their own health care and wellness needs through improved communication.  Piloted last year at the OCT Program at UNF, this comprehensive 22-hour curriculum includes Microsoft Power Point slides with embedded video for learners, web-based resources and print materials, and an Instructor’s Guide with step-by-step guidance that corresponds to learner materials. In this session, we will describe the program, show materials from the curriculum, and report results from its first year of implementation.

The Arc Jacksonville On Campus Transition program at the University of North Florida offers a unique and innovative residential component to the program. Students are given the opportunity to engage in the same experiences of other college students who are learning how to live with their peers, independently from home. The goal of the program is for the students to grow and mature like their peers in an environment typical of most college students living away from home (i.e., living with roommates.) By receiving guidance and support through peer-relationships with their HMs and fellow students, it is believed that the skills necessary to live in the community, with minimal supports.

Universal Design for Learning for Postsecondary Education (UDL) is a new online module developed through a team effort led by Mickie Hayes, Director of the Florida Consortium on Postsecondary Education and Intellectual Disabilities. The module was written by Mary Ann Gorman, a UDL expert and doctoral student in Special Education and Disability Studies, designed and developed by Lezlie Cline and the Florida Center for Interactive Media (FCIM) at Florida State University and developed in partnership with the Ohio State University Universal Design for Learning FAME module. This unique module has been intentionally written and designed using UDL principles to teach postsecondary educators the concepts, strategies, and benefits of UDL. Participants will get the first look at this extraordinary UDL module scheduled to go live in early November.

AmeriCorps Mentor Recruiters will present a short workshop on some of the more common scenarios mentors may encounter when mentoring a student within a transitional postsecondary education program. Mentor Recruiters will assist mentors in open discussions on how to address certain situations such as cell phone use and how to notice abuse-which could occur with any student. The Mentor Recruiters will also allow time to offer any advice on personal occurrences which a mentor may have already encountered.
